Joey felt a shiver run through him. He forced a smile and then nodded. “I know. I was just…surprised.” He let his gaze take the man in fully; he looked so…different. This was not the Craig who had lived with him… This was something else entirely. “Well…come on in.” Joey said. “Want a beer or something?” He offered.

Joey turned and grinned. “I have wine, too. See, you can’t have a dinner party without wine.” He said. “Spike and Snake should be here soon.” He still couldn’t believe he had looked at Craig and saw Albert. How fucking odd was that? Julia, what would she have thought? Joey closed his eyes and pushed the thought away. Craig was overdressed for this thing, Joey thought. Way overdressed.

“So…you have…a new wardrobe.”

Craig was actually a little hurt that Joey looked upon him in such a way. He ground his teeth together but kept an eager look on his face. There was nothing wrong. Nothing. “Surprised?” He asked. And then he glanced down to his attire. This wasn’t like the old clothes Craig used to wear—his favorite leather jacket, the denim. Wristbands and worn out band T-shirts. Sneakers and messy hair. He supposed this was quite a change. His hair was neat, close to his head. He had on more or less a suit, minus the jacket part. Suspenders and a tie? When did Craig ever? But, he certainly had for quite some time.

He loosened the tie a little bit, feeling oddly uncomfortable. “Uh, I’ll take the beer.” Craig stated. He had gotten quite a taste for beer lately. Well, not lately, but during his college years. You can’t have a party without wine. Oh, Joey was trying to show him up. He recalled calling the other out on being an “adult.” Joey was very childish in many ways, and he supposed it was from never actually getting out of that adolescent mind. “I see.” He said, putting his hands in his pockets. And, then, Joey brought up his clothing. Craig grimaced. Well, this was going to be awkward.

“Haha, yeah. Uh. A lot has happened since college.” A shrug. Nothing was wrong.

“So I see.” Joey said. He flashed Craig a smile, and was determined not to make things weird. “So come on in, come on in.” he said. “We’ve got dogs and burgers grilling. I’ll be grilling some veggies to go with it.” He motioned for Craig to follow him into the kitchen where the food items were set up. “There’s your wine.” Joey chuckled, wanting to lighten the mood. “Did you bring a guest? I should have told you that you could.” He should have remembered that.

Joey tossed his empty beer bottle into the trash and dug out two fresh ones. He handed one to Craig, then popped the tab on his own. “So, how’s life now?” He knew from Snake that Craig taught at Degrassi. “Do you like being a teacher?” He felt like playing twenty questions. “Dating anyone?” Joey asked. He lifted the beer to his lips and took a long drink. Snake could have warned him. Hell, anyone could have!

Hearing the knock, Joey cocked an eyebrow. Someone was early. He told Angie and her friends to turn the racket down a bit then went to the door. The person at the door made the older man stutter, almost drop the bottle that he’d been holding. It was like a ghost from the past, and not the friendly type of ghost, either.

Certainly wasn’t no Casper, that was for sure. Joey blinked, and tried to remember how to form words. “Albert?” He half whispered. That was what the vision in front of him looked like, though…though it wasn’t. That was the scary thing. Joey tightened his grip on the half empty bottle of beer he’d been drinking and lifted it up, looking at it. He’d only had two, right? He swallowed.

Craig saw Joey and blinked a couple of times. The other had aged. His facial hair that was one dark and full was now turning gray. He noticed the lines of age on the other man’s face. Was he forty yet? He was losing track of time. Though, the older seemed to be even more surprised to see him. Albert? Craig stared at him, confusion on his features, and then he pulled off the glasses, pocketing them in his breast pocket. He laughed a little awkwardly and shrugged his shoulders. “Uh, no, Joey. It’s just me.” He put his hand on the back of his head, grinning a little bit.

Wow. Did he really resemble his father that much? That kind of surprised and worried him. No, not worried. That meant he was doing the right thing. He would probably make Albert so proud. A lighthearted smile reached his features. “Craig? You know, your step-son?” He waved his hand over the other’s face. “Craig Manning, son of Albert?”

Joey felt a shiver run through him. He forced a smile and then nodded. “I know. I was just…surprised.” He let his gaze take the man in fully; he looked so…different. This was not the Craig he had picked up from the airport, drugged out and pale. This was not the Craig who had lived with him, either. This was something else entirely.

Being back in Toronto was weird. It hadn’t changed. Joey had even bought back the car lot that had once housed Jeremiah Auto and he was back in business. Calgary wasn’t as great a location as he once thought it was, but with all the drama he needed a change of scenery. And now he wanted to move back. The only one who had complaints about it was his daughter, Angie who was leaving her friends.

But she would get over it once she started making friends at Degrassi. Joey had decided on having a cook out/dinner party since some people doubted his adult-ness. He wanted to show them up. That, and he wanted to keep an eye on things. There was this gut feeling in him that something…something was wrong. Joey had everything set up. Angie had invited a few friends she’d managed to make at school and they were in the living room watching something on television. It sounded like that Justin Belieber or whatever his name was. “Baby, baby, baby. That’s not a lyric. I could’ve done that with the Zits and been more famous.” Joey scoffed the first time Angie had made him listen to that song. Angie had done her famous eye rolling act and gagging routine.

Snake was RSVP-ing and bringing Spike and Jack. They would have a full house including Renee and Craig. Joey carried out a bottle of wine and set it in his one ice bucket, then brought out the six packs he preferred and he knew Snake did too. Christine would probably drink a little of the wine if nothing else, so it wouldn’t go to waste. Lighting up the grill, Joey put some burgers and hot dogs on the rack.

“Heh. Who’s the adult now?” Joey muttered to himself. He flipped a burger over and brought the plate of meats closer. “I know what I’m doing.”

Craig was the first to arrive, punctual as ever. He sighed, adjusting his tie. When he heard dinner party, he assumed there would be formal-esque attire. So, his suspenders, tie, oxford button down, and slacks. Little did he know Joey was planning a barbecue for the “older” people. He cleared his throat and adjusted his thick frames. This would be an interesting experience. The last Craig had see Joey was the summer before college, when he helped the other move to Calgary. It had been a long while since, and a lot of things had changed. Craig was a faculty member at Degrassi now. He was on to bigger and better things. And, secretly, he wasn’t fulfilling the thing he wanted most. But, hey. You give up the things you love for the things you need.

At least, that was something he remembered Albert telling him, anyway. With a shrug, Craig reached to knock on the door. He patiently waited on the opposite side of it. Of course, it was nothing like the house Craig had grown up in, or the place that he had spent nearly four years in, but it was nice… for Joey. Right. Craig couldn’t demean himself to live in a place like this unless he could live in the whole place himself. T’ch, there was no telling just how much room they had. It couldn’t be a lot. And Angie was still a growing girl… He shook his thoughts away. No, he wasn’t supposed to criticize today. He was supposed to enjoy.
